Professional learning enhanced by technology for elementary school teachers for Culture and Mathematics: A design research project

Abstract

Design research or experiment is a relatively new research methodology in education and other areas. A design for professional learning for elementary teachers to recognise and use cultural mathematics in schools has been developed and will be tested through three phases. In addition, a design for technology delivery has also been developed and will be assessed. Evaluation at each phase will lead to improvements in the designs. The design takes account of three ecological areas of Papua New Guinea: highlands, coastal and areas within coastal or island regions that have high altitudes or are some distance from the sea. After initial discussions with some elementary teachers and checking of questionnaires and ethics clearances, the design for professional learning was taken to three elementary schools in the three ecological areas. Where possible, the languages and cultures of researchers are used. During and following this implementation data was collected and analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively and improvements made for the workshop delivery. Initial development of the interrelated computer files was also assessed. The final phase will involve delivery via computer. These designs (professional learning and computer delivery) will be applicable in other research areas especially professional learning in personnel working in remote areas. The design for professional learning has six interrelated parts: Mathematical ways of thinking, language for mathematics, cultural activities and teachers cultural knowledge and partnerships will feed into activities appropriate for young children and this will be involved in assessing children's development. The design for delivery will involve computer facilitation within a remote village, and teachers learning via interactive inter-linked files.
