Abstract
This thesis is a reconstruction of the source history of Luke’s gospel prior to
Luke’s discovery of Mark, and a literary reading of Luke’s sources. The research
draws on a variety of critical models, but is unified by the central image of the Proto- Luke source: the journey of discipleship. This journey becomes the journey of the critical scholar, to find and interrogate the Jesus behind the text.
