Providing targeted support to disengaged students in response to COVID-19

Abstract

This project showcases the successful expansion from a pilot project from one Faculty contacting 425 students to a whole of university model. The first census date for a student commencing at University represents a critical juncture in the academic journey; for both the student (in terms of accruing debt) and the institution (in terms of minimising attrition rates). The Charles Sturt University Retention team worked with academics from across the three Faculties and identified students with missed early-assessment items and coordinated targeted student support via phone and SMS. In response to the COVID-19 crisis, the project expanded and tracked over 7000 missed assignments, contacting over 2500 disengaged students. Student feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many students subsequently submitting the missed assignment.

OtherUT is replacing our planned 2020 conference in Padua with a virtual conference, to be held on the original dates of July 1-3, with bonus extended access. This virtual conference will have two themes—our original theme of “Toward Sustainable Assessment” and a second theme, “The Online Pivot,” about teaching in a virtual environment.

The 45th IUT conference will feature many of our traditional offering—papers, posters, roundtables, and plenary addresses—some live and some posted for access before and after the conference. Participants will enjoy unlimited access to all conference materials online through September 30th. In addition, we will offer networking and group chat opportunities, including a robust online forum, with both synchronous and asynchronous options to participate on your schedule. Finally, building on this virtual conference, we plan to make our website a year-round resource for the university teaching community.
