Translated title of the contribution: Reading as a style of living

Research output: Contribution to specialist publicationArticle

Abstract

This article adopts an ontological and phenomenological perspective to the concept of reading. From this perspective, the author articulates the significance of reading in the everyday life practice and discusses its connection with other daily activities. The article provides an answer to two questions in this area. The first question is about whether reading is an unavoidable necessity or an optional choice; and if it is a choice, what kind of choice it is. Secondly, how reading can be transformed from a side activity in the margins of life into an ongoing and central action in everyday routine, and in this case, what are the achievements for the individuals and societies. According to the article, there is a potential power in reading that can turn it from a temporary action on the edge of everyday chores into a key action in the process of self-actualisation. When reading becomes a way of living, it affects different aspects of life. In particular, for those who are eager to discover their real potentials, reading is always a great opportunity and they are well aware of its value. They do not need the approval or admiration of others in their reading practice, and just an active interaction with the world of text has become a joyful activity for them. Although the pleasure they experience from reading is the greatest reward they enjoy and do not ask for anything beyond it, this approach to reading will bring many achievements for them.
