Abstract

In the context of a special issue of the literary journal 'Southerly'devoted to India, this personal memoir of the first of the author's visits to India, for the international conference of the Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies in 1977, reflects on the challenge of attempting to read the imagery of an unfamiliar culture, and on the changes that have occurred in India and in the understanding of it by foreigners over a generation.
