This article describes the development of a molecularly imprinted polymer housing custom designed cavities capable of selectively binding ergosterol through the use of a novel ergosteryl methacrylate template. Binding assays revealed the ability to discriminate between ergosterol and several structurally similar competitors. When employed in solid phase extraction format, the imprinted polymer displayed excellent recoveries of ergosterol from an extract of the fruiting body powder of the medicinal fungus Ganoderma tsugae.
