Abstract

Reductio Ad - Ponton Theatre, Charles Sturt University 22-26 May, 2012. Running time: 1hour 15mins. (Harding - playwright; Smith - director). You can choose your friends but you can't choose your family. Presented by the students of CSU's Theatre Media course, Reductio Ad is a new Australian play by award winning screenwriter and playwright Ray Harding. This darkly absurd work tracks one day in the life of the Smith's, a dysfunctional family living in the year 2027 as the last survivors on Earth'or so they think. Bazza, Beryl, and their four adult children barely cling to their sanity as they seek refuge inside an abandoned detention centre. Trapped inside to escape the brutality of the Australian desert each are forced to face their fears ' and question their identity. Who were they before they arrived at this desolate place? Bazza desperately tries to maintain his role as head of the family but the cracks are deep and the truth is starting to erupt. Reductio Ad is a black comedy exploring our reliance of technology, celebrity and religion to solve life's inexplicable mysteries in the face of annihilationHow will the Smith's find purpose in a world devoid of meaning? How would you?
