Regional microgrids: The missing jigsaw piece in the Australian power distribution puzzle

Research output: Book/ReportCommissioned report (non-public)

Abstract

This project completed a review of microgrids (MGs) literature and their development in Australia. It also conducted a feasibility study on a microgrid project proposed by CLEAN Cowra. Two key aspects are explored. Firstly, the study assessed the current state of play and the likely future of Australian MGs and identified the obstacles common to the many projects under development in Australia. Secondly, a detailed feasibility study of the MG project is completed through Clean Core Development Pty Ltd. The project is a precinct-scaled embedded network, with multiple industrial customers uniquely across public and private allotments. Overall, the research highlights the potential for MGs to provide important environmental and economic benefits including reducing emissions through renewable energy generation and lower transmission costs, while improving energy security and access as climate disruption soars. Different MG business models have emerged, shaped by ownership structures, unique local factors, and thus creating complex challenges and opportunities for operators. Due to the MG’s high initial development costs, this report demonstrates that project viability relies heavily on funding program dedicated to support the initial development of the MG project.
