Abstract
The 'spirit that makes for war' is inexorably primed by 'peacetime' narratives and practices of competition, anxiety, scarcity and threat. For theologian Karl Barth 'the real issue in war [is] the economic power which in war is shown not so much to be possessed by man as to possess him'. These narratives and practices arguably now 'possess' Australia. The 'emergency of peace' is to find together an order of life that is meaningful and just, unveiled to us in the kingdom of Christ.
