Abstract
Background
Primary health care systems in remote Australia are facing enormous workforce pressures whilst the need for effective care for remote populations has never been greater. Long-term health workforce shortages and geographical maldistribution have been increasingly superseded by reliance on agency and locum staff and declining employment of First Nations peoples. Flipping these prevailing conditions to employment models characterised by retention of permanent staff and enhanced connection with community, including through employing local community members, is urgent and demands inspiration, imagination and innovation.
Our innovative program of research aims to strengthen the evidence-base around what retention strategies work for which groups of remote employees by being explicit about the underlying mechanisms. This will address gaps in the current evidence-base and inform co-design, implementation and evaluation of bundled retention interventions in partnership with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services and the communities they serve.
