    Abstract

Significant Roadside Environment Area uses the road/roadside as a microcosm to explore the contemporary politics of space and mobility. In NSW, roadsides make up almost 5% of the state's total landmass ' an area equivalent in size to the state's National Parks. Roadsides are often the last fragmented corridors of genetic diversity, and are home to some of the last tracts of remnant native vegetation and threatened species. But roadsides are an uneasy marriage between financial interests and environmental vestiges ' a literal line between nature and technology. Significant Roadside Environment Area explores the competing values that are assigned to land, history and nature, tracing the significance of the road/pathway through the Riverina region from pre-colonial to contemporary times. Also: http://corchard.com.au/index.php/significant-roadside-1/
