Abstract
Snakecharmer was a collaborative creative practice research project with Joshua Sarantakos of The Anglican Riverina College (TRAC), contributing to the International Baccalaurate's 'Collaborative Music Maker'.
Associate Professor Sam Bowker's experimental research regarding historical practices in shadow theatre (notably the Greek 'karagozi' system) and the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 was combined collaboratively with Joshua Sarantako's applied research regarding clarinet polyphonics and the interpretation of historical compositions from multiple sources. This resulted in a short performance (under 10 minutes) in which a shadow puppet in the form of a serpent, dancing through a narrative co-written by both researchers, developed over several meetings, rehearsals and correspondence.
The puppet was designed and operated by Sam Bowker, lasercut and digitised by Timothy Crutchett. Music was written and performed by Joshua Sarantakos, supervised by Clare Brassil (TRAC) and hosted by Vickie Burkinshaw as a free public concert at The Curious Rabbit on Wiradjuri country in Wagga Wagga on Friday 9 August 2024. This event attracted a full house audience, and was widely circulated on social media.
