Abstract

Aim: Underpinned by TEQSA requirements of evidencing scholarly activity, this study considers how scholarly activity guidelines for academics impact on teaching practices and delivery of learning outcomes. There is a need to understand the true impact of TEQSA requirements of scholarship on Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) practices.

Background: SoTL, an inquiry-based approach, aimed to improve the practices of teaching academics in a systematic way through continuous reflection on their students’ learning outcomes. Informed by these reflections, courses and programs could be redeveloped (Herbert & van der laan, 2021). In 2018, in line with the Higher Education Standards (HES) Framework (Threshold Standards), TEQSA (2018) outlined their expectations of scholarship. This includes gaining new or improved understanding, engaging and keeping up to date with advances in the field, that informs the design and delivery of qualifications (CSU, 2021; Healey & Cook-Sather, 2019).

Description: Drawing on SoTL approaches and the Australian regional university's policies and frameworks that have emerged to address TEQSA evidence requirements, this poster presents a literature review of the extent and nature of SoTL practices in an Australian regional university which is relatively inconspicuous as far as this study can see.

Method: A scoping literature review is applied to the scholarly activity policies and framework documents from the Australian regional university, as well as publicly available peer-reviewed literature from this university to explore its application and impact on elevating teaching practices.

Findings: Recommendations on making SOTL research more visible at an Australian regional university is put forward. Reflecting on the emerging evidence of SoTL from scoping the literature in this university’s context while addressing TEQSA requirements leads to future research on forming a more complementary relationship between addressing TEQSA requirements and SoTL practices.

Contribution: This contributes directly to SoTL practices, research and teaching quality professional development.
