Abstract
Purpose: To demonstrate the relationship between the achievement of each of the 17 SDGs and communication/swallowing (disability) as well as showcasing the breadth of speech-language pathologists’ (SLPs’) work in relation to the SDGs.
Methods: A 2023 issue of the International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology (open access) contains over 30 papers that demonstrate contributions towards the achievement of each of the 17 SDGs, and the interconnection between communication/swallowing, people and the planet.
Results: The SLP profession across the globe has a role to play in achieving each of the 17 SDGs. The contributions range from recommendations about the involvement of children and young people who experience communication disability in inclusive design of schools (SDG 11), to looking for alternatives to plastic straw usage for people who experience swallowing disabilities (SDG 14), and in protection from modern slavery (SDGs 8 &16).
Conclusion: SLPs should be aware of the SDGs and their role in their achievement. This information can be used to demonstrate the far-reaching impact of communication and swallowing disability, to justify the need for services and to demonstrate the positive economic impact of SLPs’ interventions.
