Stepping stones towards higher education teaching and learning leadership: A case study on becoming a Deputy Dean

Abstract

This chapter follows the teaching and learning stepping stones of the author, from being a school teacher to a tertiary lecturer to various institutional leadership positions, over a 30-year career in education. The chapter highlights key turning points that have informed and directed the author’s teaching and learning leadership, how these events have shaped their leadership approach and how they continue to inform practice. The author’s current role as Deputy Dean is used as a case study in leadership including a brief background to illustrate the stepping stones taken to reach this role. Key aspects of leadership, including managing and valuing staff, dealing with change management and building partnerships are explored. The chapter concludes with some advice for future leaders based on these experiences.
