Abstract
This presentation features a project which enabled the implementation of a sustainable, student-led podiatry clinic at Westside Community Centre in West Albury, NSW. It highlights the importance of allyship in creating opportunities to meet community needs.
The podiatry clinic was launched as a pilot project in July 2021, in response to community-identified need for local allied health services. Seed funding from Three Rivers Department of Rural Health (DRH) enabled the School of Allied Health, Exercise and Sports Sciences at Charles Sturt University to equip the podiatry clinic and employ a podiatrist as a clinical educator. Ongoing funding has been provided by Murray Primary Health Network with a new contract agreed for 2023-24. By the end of June 2023, the service had provided care for 139 community members (16.5% Aboriginal; 1% Torres Strait Islander) and generated 441 community workplace learning hours for 3rd and 4th year podiatry students. Feedback from people attending the podiatry clinic is unanimously positive. This project demonstrates the value of a community and university partnership through which non-Indigenous allies partner with Aboriginal colleagues to listen to community, create a culturally responsive podiatry service, and model allyship for First Nations and non-Indigenous students.
This student-led podiatry clinic provides an innovative model of healthcare which meets community need and enables students to experience culturally responsive practice.
