Abstract
Teacher librarians are highly influential in shaping the reading cultures of their schools. Literacy development is a key part of the school library’s role, with the teacher librarian leading the charge through the promotion of reading for pleasure. The link between reading for pleasure and increased literacy skills is clear but reading for pleasure is often neglected in secondary schools. Therefore, it is essential that teacher librarians are armed with current research to support their promotion of reading for pleasure as an activity that will have positive impacts on student results.
This presentation will present a brief overview of school library history in Australia, and how the role of the teacher librarian has evolved, particularly in relation to their position as a literacy specialist. Current research on the importance of understanding the reading identities and reading motivation of secondary students shall be presented, with four reading identity categories proposed. Understanding the link between reader motivation and reader identity is key for teacher librarians wanting to engage their students in reading for pleasure. Teacher librarians will be armed with current research to support the promotion of reading for pleasure in their schools, as well information on why it is important that they harness their influence to positively affect the reading.
