Abstract

The increase in average herd size coupled with the difficulty to attract and retain staff on-farms, threatens the long-term viability of the dairy industry across most dairy producing regions. Dairy producers need to find solutions to this issue, and technology and automation appear as most promising and effective. Technology can replace repetitive tasks, increase the accuracy and frequency of individual measurements or enable better decision making on-farm. Within the wide range of technologies currently available, robotic milking is probably the one that could enable farmers a great opportunity to increase overall productivity, profitability and sustainability through improved labor efficiency, lifestyle and general management on-farm through better use of information gathered by sensors.
