Abstract
In most Pacific Island cultures tattooing was a means of visually demonstrating rank and status within a community. In Micronesia tattooing also served to clearly mark out its wearer as a member of one island population and thereby differentiate them from people from other islands. This book provides a comprehensive overview on traditional tattooing in the Marshall Islands. Drawing on a wide range of sources it documents the nature and history of individual tattoo motifs and their combinations and places them into a cultural context.
