Abstract
This is a new paperback edition of an original retelling of the Christmas story commissioned by the ABC. Hardback edition was titled THE ABC BOOK OF CHRISTMAS and published in 2009, now titled THE ABC KIDS BOOK OF CHRISTMAS and published in paperback 2018. For this publication I was asked to write the word text, and 13 famous Australian illustrators for children were commissioned to illustrate a scene of their choice. The concept conveys the diversity and inclusiveness of the Christian story of the Nativity at its best.
Research for the book involved reading the story of the Nativity in several editions of the gospels of Matthew and Luke, as well as a range of adaptations already published. Although the 32 page extent is short, striking the right balance between fidelity to well known versions of the story in the Bible, and a commitment to investing the text with read-aloud accessibility for young children was the complex challenge in this project. It integrates my professional experience and qualifications as both a researcher in the filed of Children's Literature and as a creative writer of picture book texts.
