Abstract

KEYNOTE: We need to do the best we can to ensure that we manage our horses appropriately, ethically and sustainably, if we are to safeguard their welfare, wellbeing and promote a good quality of life. With the introduction of the Five Domains Model framework for assessing animal welfare, and the recent interest in using it to assess equine welfare, the role of animal-based indicators is becoming increasingly acknowledged. Contemporary assessments of equine welfare now go beyond the provision of resources and include behavioural and physiological measurements obtained at the individual animal level.
