Abstract

Gerald Bray’s The Church could have been cast as a question. Driven by the puzzle of church unity in light of present division, questions proliferate throughout as Bray considers the theological ramifications of the church’s various forms. Yet what is clear, if lamentable, for Bray from the beginning is ‘The sad fact ... that if the church is the body of Christ, it has the wounds to prove it’ (viii). Bray’s work strives to take account of this ‘sad fact’ through a binocular set of historical and doctrinal lenses, even as it hopes to offer itself as a balm for the ecclesial wounds which it describes.
