The culture challenge: How Ambulance Tasmania is turning things around

Abstract

Ambulance Tasmania faced a culture crisis in 2020-2021, with reports of bullying, harassment, and discrimination among its staff. As the newly appointed Chief Executive, I initiated a radical culture change process that involved the whole organization in co-designing a Culture Improvement Action Plan. The plan, launched in August 2022, outlines our vision, values, and actions to create a safe, supportive, and respectful work environment for all. In this presentation, I will share the lessons learned from leading this culture change journey, highlighting the benefits and challenges of co-designing solutions with staff, being transparent about the issues and progress, and communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders. I will also offer practical tips and strategies for other paramedic services that want to transform their workplace culture and enhance their performance and reputation.
