Abstract

Inclusive practice in Australian schools today remains contested and much debated. This presentation will provide some observations about special needs education and the challenges in the field. First, the legislative and policy drivers for inclusion will be considered and the commonly identified need for the inclusion of students with special needs. Then, common challenges to inclusion of children with special needs in educational contexts will be addressed. Finally, some suggestions for how these challenges might be overcome and further considerations will be highlighted.
