Abstract

Australia is a country of diverse peoples and cultures. The First Nations People
of Australia are one of the oldest cultures in the world, with DNA evidence
confirming they left Africa more than 75,000 years ago. At the same time,
Australia is a country of immigrants. The 2020 census noted almost a third of the
population was born overseas. With this wide range of cultural diversity comes a
variety of authors and illustrators creating Australian youth literature.
Here I would like to highlight this diversity of perspectives with a strong focus on
literature from the First Peoples of Australia, immigrants, and asylum seekers, as
well as useful resources on where to find titles.
