Abstract
In this chapter, we explore the drawing and writing journey, starting from when children first notice people around them engaged in writing. We will examine their first scribbles, early drawings and tentative explorations of written language, and finish with exemplars from young writers in the early years of school. How drawing, talking and writing can be used as a scaffold to support children as they travel their own personal writing journeys is also discussed. Possible writing milestones are signposted throughout the chapter, although they are not presented as a linear process that all children must experience.
