Abstract
'The Hatpin', directed by Kim Hardwick with music by Peter Rutherford and lyrics by James Millar, is an original Australian musical drama set in the Australian winter of 1892. It is based on the true story of Amber Murray, a single mother who advertised her baby in a newspaper-trading column in the hope of saving his life...and who ended up embroiled in one of the most captivating, moving and exciting criminal trials in Australian history. It contributed to the evolving original musical culture within the Australian theatrical landscape, and was subsequently included in the New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2008. It was originally produced by White Box Theatre and Neil Gooding Productions and premiered at The York Theatre, The Seymour Centre, Sydney, in February 2008.
