Abstract

'The Hatpin', directed by Kim Hardwick with music by Peter Rutherford and lyrics by James Millar, is an original Australian musical drama set in the Australian winter of 1892. It is based on the true story of Amber Murray, a single mother who advertised her baby in a newspaper-trading column in the hope of saving his life...and who ended up embroiled in one of the most captivating, moving and exciting criminal trials in Australian history. In this production, selected in the New York Musical Theatre Festival, the director Kim Hardwick reconceptualised her original Australian production for an American audience. It contributed to the evolving original musical culture within the Australian theatrical landscape, playing at a major International theatre space, the Chernuchin Theatre New York between 15 September and 24 September 2008.
