Abstract
A distinction between the idea of a christian university and a christian idea of the university enables a more nuanced approach to the history of the emergence of universities and to that of christian engagement with social institutions. It also enables a clearer distinction between the emergence in Australia of religiously based and sponsored universities and more pragmatic engagements between religious bodies and public universities.
