N2 - Recent developments in scholarship, theology and official liturgical texts and documents have opened a range of understandings of the Eucharist. The rite of the Mass is investigated from a more structural perspective to better understand the role of petition in the Mass. The main purpose is to identify these ritual moments, uncover their particular genius as prayers, as well as assess their role within the larger liturgy itself. The hope is that this will open up further insights into the nature of the Mass, and into the nature of the hierarchically arrayed community which celebrates it in Christ (General Instruction of the Roman Liturgy, GIRM 16).
