The Reading Gift: a true story

Abstract

DANNY Danny is fifteen, and in Year Nine. A leader among his friends, and at home pretty well the man of the house, he has more freedom than most other kids his age. Danny comes from a single parent home. His father lives somewhere in Queensland and Danny lives with his mother, alone together, in this city in southern New South Wales. There is no doubt when you are talking with Danny – he is already good at using many aspects of English; he can negotiate, describe how to do something and can also get himself into plenty of trouble by being ready to give a smart opinion or a quick reply. He has had a lot of practice standing up for himself outside school, and he carries these skills with him into class, and sometimes into trouble, just about every day at school.
