Abstract
Body condition scoring (BCS) is a management tool developed to assist sheep producers monitor the condition of a flock without the need for weigh scales (Jefferies 1961). The predicted change in liveweight (LW, kg) per unit change in BCS is defined as 0.15 times the standard reference weight (SRW, BCS 3), however, may vary depending on age, breed, sex and pregnancy status (CSIRO 2007; McHugh et al. 2019). This was more recently determined to be 0.19 in Merino ewes managed at either BCS 2 or BCS 3 during late pregnancy (van Burgel et al. 2011). Management guidelines for sheep have been developed based on BCS, and understanding the relationship between BCS and LW will better assist producers with feed management practices and strategies, particularly as use of LW scales and electronic ear tags become more common.
