This is the narration of the muqqadim of an Egyptian khayal al-zill shadow play. This literary form collects quotations, synthesizes stories, and translates texts across time and place. The task of the muqqadim is to write, narrate and operate shadow puppets to tell an original story. By tradition, their words at the beginning always give away the ending, if you listen closely.
