    Abstract

In Ball's (1990) discussion of preservice teachers' understanding of the concept of fraction division she suggested the need to focus on the subject matter knowledge of preservice teachers in order to have learning with relational understanding in the mathematics classrooms. Fraction division is taught in the last two years of elementary school in Singapore. This paper will explore some of the findings in a study of the knowledge of 122 first year elementary preservice teachers on fraction division. The study involved the preservice teachers taking a four fraction-division item questionnaire. The study found that the preservice teachers did not fare well in the questionnaire and that they tend to choose measurement problems rather than partitive problems.
