N2 - The aim of this scientific review is to provide up-to-date knowledge of animal welfare in different egg production systems. A key element of this work is to identify best practice with respect to welfare, management, health, food safety and biosecurity. Best practice will form the basis for recommendations for a way forward for critical aspects of hen welfare in non-cage systems. Where possible, the review will highlight issues specific to Australian needs. Review of the scientific literature is presented in four sections: 1) welfare indicators, 2) egg quality, consumer acceptance and marketing, 3) management and 4) health, food safety and biosecurity. An executive summary of best practice recommendation is presented in a matrix at the start of the document.
