Abstract
The White Road is a series of intertwined stories, part memoir and part travelogue, which encompasses De Waal's research into the history of the development of porcelain in China, Europe, England, America, and then Dachau in Germany. De Waal integrates his own development as a potter and his longtime obsession with making white pots (using porcelain) with its history. He describes it as his "paying of dues" to those who have gone before. The book offers some philosophical insights and culminates in the descriptions of several relevant exhibitions of his work in Cambridge and New York related to this research.
