Abstract

This research aims to understand the nexus between the mining industry, employment in regional and rural Australia, and the role the mining industry plays, or could play, in the advancement of regional and rural women’s career opportunities. Of particular focus is the potential of the mining industry to provide opportunities for women to live and work in regional and rural Australia without the need to leave these areas to obtain training and employment opportunities in
metropolitan areas.

The project investigates the problem of low numbers of women in skilled trade occupations in the mining industry and seeks to understand how the mining industry can attract more women into these roles in regional areas. The focus of the project is to support women to achieve opportunities to train and work in regional areas, to contribute to the vibrant sustainability of regional Australia, and to promote the business case for hiring women in the mining industry.
