Abstract

Here we report a new physical phenomenon referred to as "nanoshearingThe nanoshearing phenomenon has recently been observed on purpose build microfluidic devices, and involves lateral fluid flow generated within a few nanometers of an electrode surface [1]. The flow is induced by alternating current (ac) electrohydrodynamics (ac-EHD) [2] and can be tuned through the manipulation of ac frequency, amplitude, and solution conditions. To demonstrate the utility of this tuneable nanoshearing phenomenon, we show that an ac-EHD device containing asymmetric planar and microtip electrode pairs can capture whole breast cancer cells in blood, with high efficiency (approximately 92%) and specificity.
