Abstract

This chapter examines the nature and operation of compassion in the context of western pluralistic society which is heavily impacted by a narcissistic culture. In this context the common good and its underlying basis in concepts of compassion informed by Christian teaching is both challenging and urgent. The paper identifies the implications for the vocation of the Church and discipleship.
