Abstract

In this chapter, we introduce and describe various techniques and approaches for water and irrigation management to increase water productivity in semiarid and arid lands, thereby promoting sustainable agriculture. Significant reductions in water losses can be achieved by modifying the inflow rate and field dimensions in surface irrigation. Irrigation efficiency can be significantly increased through the use of drip-tape and subsurface drip irrigation methods for agricultural and orchard crops. New technologies, such as various sensors, mulches, gated pipes, simulation models, and deficit irrigation techniques, can also contribute to on-farm water management. Additionally, the use of improved seeds and cultivars, water market, determining the date, density, arrangement, and pattern of cultivation, seedling cultivation, the development of greenhouse cultivation, and training and informing farmers about irrigation scheduling and the use of technologies have been discussed. This chapter also discusses the necessity of water and irrigation management for optimum use of water resources, considering economic, social, and environmental outcomes.
