Abstract
This chapter introduces several definitions of public relations in an attempt to clarify the parameters of this discipline, There is an overview of the UK public relations sector, core tasks and skills are discussed, and the distinctions are made between public relations and the fields of marketing and advertising. Finally, an overview of the main approaches to the study of public relations is offered to give context to the subject.
