Abstract

The 19th and early 20th century history of libraries and collections in Australia were closely connected with institutions of social control, such as prisons, reformatories, religious groups and other government institutions aimed at shaping social behavior. This history sits alongside the presentation of libraries as a public good and inclusive to all members of the community. This presentationExplored how ideologies of whiteness and goodness work to obscure the historically and socially exclusive operation of libraries.
