    Abstract

This chapter seeks to explore higher education 'retention' and 'success' in relation to broad political, socio-cultural and personal terms. This understanding will not only draw upon theoretical or statistical understandings of these concepts but equally, will examine how retention and success are negotiated at a personal or embodied level referring to the ways in which students themselves reflect upon these concepts. In more deeply considering these fields, the nature of student retention and why this 'matters' at a national, institutional and individual level can be unpacked. Drawing on international literature and policy, the chapter provides a deeper understanding of the ways in which retention and success are bound up with wider political and ideological beliefs that often preclude or ignore the centrality of the learner in the enactment of academic endeavours.
