Abstract

Words & Pictures, curated by Jamie Holcombe, is a multiple participant exhibition of photographic imagery responding to written descriptions of previously unseen images. The works in the exhibition explore the relationship between text and image and the subsequent creation of meaning.Participants in the exhibition exchanged written descriptions of photographic images, which were in turn interpreted by the recipient as photographic images. The resultant works investigate the theoretical connection between words and pictures, and contribute to critical discourse about the construction of meaning in photographic images. The exhibition reveals the equally effective transmission of emotional 'feel between the two mediums of text and image, regardless of the text being pragmatically descriptive or poetic. Ultimately some images demonstrate the same (sometimes unintended and sometimes deliberate) interpretive shift that occurs with the interpretation of words, which can create an anomaly in meaning, not unlike one in a whispering game or a rumour.
